Gounaris shows how patronage networks linked the Macedonian Struggle to the anticommunist sentiment of the Civil War, Thanos Veremis analyzes the populist  radicalism of Andreas Papandreou, whilst Ioannis Koliopoulos examines “the ambiguities of the very idea of a modern Greece.” Mark Mazower and Charles Stewart explore local perceptions about the miraculous power of the Virgin Mary, while Joao de Pina-Cabral associates, without comparing, the devil figure of the Sarakatsani and that of Brazilians.  Renee Hirschon, Roger Just and Juliet Du Boulay apply an ethnographic approach toward the understanding of social institutions and practices, from marital failures to gift giving, from promises to sacred foods.  Lastly, Michael Herzfeld and Michael Llewellyn Smith reflect on the life and works of the great anthropologist and historian, John Campbell, in whose honor these essays were written and collected, and Charis Vlavianos dedicates a poem to his memory.”
