Environmental Education Workshops at Psychico College Elementary School

Jun 7, 2021

Throughout the course of the academic year, Environmental Education workshops were carried out at Psychico College Elementary School with the aim of providing experiential contact with nature to our students, while helping them to develop environmental awareness.

Students acquired knowledge that is part of the School’s effort to keep them informed and to help in their overall development. They got answers to interesting questions, such as:  How do plants live? What do they eat? What are their needs? How do they differ from animals? Where do they get their necessary nutrients? Why do leaves that are about to fall turn red or yellow?

They learned useful information about climate, seasons, soil, photosynthesis and the cycle of seed to plant. The journey to the kingdom of plants began and ended with pictures and workshops in their classrooms and in the garden.  During the workshops, students used the school’s soil beds to create vegetable gardens (winter and summer vegetables), they planted legumes, and cared for the beds of herbs and forest fruits.

They planted vegetables and herbs, such as lettuce, spring onions, arugula (salad rocket), broccoli, kale, cabbage, carrots, spinach, beets and radishes

They cultivated and learned about the origin of food. They sowed legumes, harvested and tasted vegetables, learned about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet and enjoyed sensory experiences with herbs and other aromatic plants.
