“The Schiller brothers, born to a German father and an Algerian mother, are raised in a Parisian ghetto.  Their parents lived in a small village in Algeria.  Their father converted to Islam, fought alongside the Algerians against French colonialism, enjoyed the respect of his fellow citizens and held the office of mayor in his village. During the civil war of 1994 that tore Algeria apart, most of the villagers, including the brothers’ parents and two siblings, were massacred.

As the brothers investigate their parents’ murder, they discover a shocking truth: their father’s true identity as a Nazi war criminal.  Vis a vis the Schiller brothers’ diaries, that of Rachel – a highly cultured person who is fully integrated in French society – and that of Malrich – an untamed dissident from the suburbs – Sansal unravels his story.  He develops the plot on three distinct, yet interrelated, levels that are based on true events:  the Holocaust, viewed through the eyes of a young Arab who discovers the horrible truths about the concentration camps; Algeria’s dirty war of the 90’s, pitting government officials against Islamists, and leaving behind thousands of innocent victims; and, the harsh situation in the French ghettos where young persons of Algerian descent have been abandoned by the State and have been surrendered to fundamentalist imams and to the resentment of fanatical Islamists.

Sansal, following in the footsteps of Primo Levi, composes an extremely ambitious and insightful novel, speaking with a disarmingly sincere voice.”

Βιογραφικό του συγγραφέα

Ο Μπουαλέμ Σανσάλ γεννήθηκε το 1949 στο Teniet-el-Haad της Αλγερίας. Σήμερα ζει στο Boumerdes, κοντά στο Αλγέρι. Μηχανικός, διδάκτωρ των οικονομικών, γενικός διευθυντής του υπουργείου Βιομηχανίας της Αλγερίας, απομακρύνθηκε από τη θέση του το 2003 λόγω των πολιτικών του φρονημάτων. Στην Αλγερία έχει απαγορευθεί η κυκλοφορία πολλών βιβλίων του (ανάμεσα σε αυτά και ο "Γερμανός μουτζαχεντίν"). Ο Σανσάλ γράφει στα γαλλικά. Τιμήθηκε το 1999 με το βραβείο πρωτοεμφανιζόμενου συγγραφέα για το βιβλίο του "Le Serment des barbares". Το βιβλίο του "Le village de l'Allemand ou Le journal des freres Schiller" (ελλ. μτφρ.: "Ο Γερμανός μουτζαχεντίν") τιμήθηκε με το μεγάλο βραβείο RTL-Lire, το μεγάλο βραβείο μυθιστορήματος της Societe des gens de lettres, το βραβείο Louis Guilloux, κι έχει μεταφραστεί σε πολλές γλώσσες.
