The Birds, portraits of Athens 2017

“The Birds, portraits of Athens 2017,”  a photo exhibition by Costas Zafeiropoulos at the National Library of Greece.

The National Library of Greece is organizing the first photo exhibition of poet Costas Zafeiropoulos titled “The Birds, portraits of Athens 2017.”  The exhibition opens on Monday, September 24, at 20:30, and will run until November 25, 2018.  Housed on the 4th floor atrium of the National Library of Greece, at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, the exhibition will be open to the public daily (including Sundays) from 09:00 to 21:00 and admission is free.

The exhibition includes photographic portraits, accompanied by an electroacoustic composition by Costis Kilymis that was written specifically for the occasion.  With poetic sensitivity infused in each portrait, the creator portrays the expressive faces of people living in hardship, placing particular emphasis on their gazes.  Each gaze reveals the inner pain, anguish and experiences suffered by the subject without requiring the emotional involvement of others.  Moreover, Costas Zafeiropoulos has treated these people with absolute respect, according them the dignity to which they are entitled.  They are persons he had gotten to know and they were photographed with their consent.

The exhibition begins with a preview of the chaotic metropolis of Athens and continues with a photograph of a wounded pigeon. From the bird in the sky, Zafeiropoulos’ lens inventively moves to the “birds” in the city – that is, the people who captivate viewers with authenticity in their appearance and with adventure written on their faces.  As Stavros Zoumboulakis, President of the National Library of Greece, who organized and curated the exhibition aptly observes: through the truth that these people exude, they reach out to the viewer with hospitable appeal.
