“Philip Roth, American author of Jewish descent, was born on March 19, 1933 in Newark, New Jersey.  He studied English Literature at Bucknell University (BA) and University of Chicago (MA).  He started his professional career as a teacher of English Literature at the University of Chicago. Later he gave lessons on creative writing at Princeton and University of New York – Hunter College.  At the University of Pennsylvania he taught Comparative Literature.  A prolific author, he wrote a total of 31 books. Among his most famous were Goodbye Columbus for which he won the National Book Award for Fiction in 1960, at the age of twenty-six.  Among his numerous awards, Philip Roth won the National Book Critics Circle Award (1987) for The Counterlife, the  PEN/Faulkner Award (1994) for Operation Shylock, the National Book Award (1995) for Sabbath’s Theater, the Pulitzer Prize (1997) for American Pastoral, his second PEN/Faulkner Award as well as the Gold Medal in Fiction of the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2001) for The Human Stain (which was adapted into a film), and yet another PEN/Faulkner Award (2007) for Everyman.  He was also bestowed the National Medal of Arts and two of the most prestigious PEN Awards for his body of works: the 2006 PEN/Nabokov Award and the 2007 PEN/ Bellow Prize for Achievement in American Fiction. In 2011 he was also honored with the International Man Booker Prize for his body of works. Roth was the only American author to have a definitive edition of his “collected works” published by the Library of America while still alive. In a 2012 interview with the French magazine Les Inrockuptibles, Roth announced that, having re-read all of his works, he would be retiring from writing (his last work of fiction was Nemesis, published in 2010).  Philip Roth died in New York of congestive heart failure on May 22, 2018, at the age of 85.”
