The Athens College AI Center was established in September 2025 to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a world increasingly shaped by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Its mission is to contribute directly to the educational transformation required in the AI era by fostering AI and digital literacy skills across the educational community. As AI continues to reshape industries, economies, and society, the Center aims to ensure that our School and our students are well positioned to be at the forefront of these changes.

The AI Center’s initiatives and activities span the following areas:

Collaboration with teachers and continuous professional development: Meaningful collaboration and engagement with teachers are vital to any educational transformation. The AI Center's main priority is to equip teachers with up-to-date teaching methods supported by AI tools.

Establishment and promotion of a framework for the responsible use of AI: The framework fosters a common understanding and direction across the educational community. The AI Center prioritizes initiatives that support the safe, ethical, and effective use of AI by educators.

Development and/or implementation of innovative curricula: Classes and educational programs on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning offered both within the formal curriculum and through extracurricular activities.

Promotion of partnerships and joint initiatives with schools, foundations, and educational institutions: Collaboration and the exchange of knowledge and experience with foundations and educational institutions are essential to developing a coherent, evidence-based framework for the creative use of AI in teaching and learning.

Promotion and/or organization of Artificial Intelligence competitions: Student initiatives, events, and competitions play a vital role in engaging the student community, empowering students, and showcasing their talents and capabilities.

From its first year of operation, the AI Center regularly organized initiatives aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence into the educational process. These included training seminars held at the School’s Academic Departments on the Code of Conduct for educators and the safe use of AI tools, as well as professional development sessions for Junior High School and High School teachers. The latter focused on best practices for AI use and prompt engineering, presenting effective strategies for integrating AI tools into teaching.

Teachers also received continuous, systematic support in both technical matters and the creative use of AI tools for the development of educational materials. The School now provides a comprehensive suite of AI tools that supports a wide range of activities, including unit and lesson planning, assessment, personalized feedback, adaptive learning, and visualization tools.

These initiatives aim to leverage AI tools to support the development of educational materials that facilitate differentiated instruction and adaptive learning.

The AI Center, in collaboration with the AI Committee, launched the Safe AI campaign to promote awareness of the safe use of Artificial Intelligence. As part of this initiative, the AI Center developed AI Codes of Conduct for teachers and students in the Elementary Schools, Junior High Schools, and High Schools. The Codes of Conduct were discussed within the School’s Academic Departments and with students and teacher advisors in the Junior High Schools.

The AI Center established a number of significant collaborations:

  • MIT – Universal AI: Students and teachers took part in the Universal AI program by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received certificates of attendance.
  • AI Summer Course: The AI Summer Course took place, led by Dr. Caramanis, professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas (Austin), with 19 students participating.
  • Discussions with academics: The members of the AI Center and the AI Committee participated in a discussion with academic Dr. Chatzisolomou on the use of AI in education. Dr. Chatzisolomou presented his research findings to the participants.
  • Participation in Classroom Futures event – Panathenea festival: The AI Center and two students representing the School’s student community, Eleni Marinaki (IB, Psychico College) and Spyros Roupas (Athens College), participated in a discussion on the future of education and the role of Artificial Intelligence. The event provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives with the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Ms. Sofia Zacharaki.
  • Visits to Innovation Centers: As part of a series of outreach initiatives, AI Center representatives visited the CTI DIOPHANTUS Innovation Centers and met with Professor Dr. Zacharoula Smyrnaiou of NKUA to exchange insights on Virtual Reality (VR) and Robotics.

The AI Center conducts ongoing research and evaluation of AI software and technologies to ensure that the tools recommended to the School continue to evolve in line with its needs. Center members maintain regular communication with teachers to receive feedback on the use of AI tools.

The AI Center designed and established two labs: the Virtual Reality & AI Lab and the Robotics & AI Lab, to promote experiential, authentic, and STEAM-based learning. Through this hands-on approach, students will become familiar with cutting-edge technology and develop their computational, creative, and critical thinking skills, while also examining the social impact of these technologies and their responsible use.
