Individual Library Research Card. February 2021

Feb 1, 2021

During Library hour, and specifically during the extra hour of Reading Appreciation Research, our kindergarten students became familiar with the steps one takes to conduct research, adapted of course to their age and abilities.

Specifically, the kindergarteners were introduced to:

  • The different types of printed and electronic sources available in the Library.
  • The steps we follow to search for information both in printed and electronic sources. Depending on the topic, they sought information in books on their own, thus developing both critical thinking and social skills, as they were asked to work with their classmates.
  • Then, with help and guidance from the librarian, they evaluated the content in order to become familiar with the way we select the right information. They borrowed material to take to class and presented it to the rest of the team.
  • This year, during the 3rd unit of inquiry, an individual research card was created, which each student completed by entering information from books he/she researched.

Additionally, during this teaching hour, students became familiar with the type of information found on a book cover and other bibliographic data.  They did reading comprehension exercises to understand the content of each story and, in general, of every book. And, they used digital sources to which the Library subscribes.

  • Each time, students located the title, author and publisher of books that they selected and distinguished between Greek and English books.
  • Each time the librarian read information from a book that students had chosen for their research, or narrated a story, the librarian would also ask comprehension questions to help students improve their oral expression.
