Training program for Elementary School teachers at the Boston Museum of Science

May 2, 2025

From April 14 to 17, 2025, eleven teachers from Athens College and Psychico College Elementary Schools (six teacher-counselors, three English Department teachers, and two Art teachers) participated in a professional development program at the Boston Museum of Science. The program focused on engineering education for elementary school students and combined experiential learning, educational site visits, and the design of interdisciplinary STEM teaching units, with a special emphasis on creatively integrating the English language and the arts.

During the program, participants:

  • Engaged in hands-on educational scenarios from the EiE (Engineering is Elementary) and YES (Youth Engineering Solutions) programs.
  • Took part in reflective discussions on engineering practices in the classroom and explored opportunities for meaningful interdisciplinary instruction.
  • Observed lessons at a local school (St. Agatha's School), and exchanged ideas and practices related to STEM implementation with fellow educators.
  • Visited the Museum's design workshops, gaining insight into the materials and pedagogical principles behind the EiE and YES programs.

The training strengthened the participants' ability to support STEM education through interdisciplinary approaches and empowered them to serve as knowledge multipliers in their school communities.

Additionally, the group had the opportunity to meet with Mr. George Antoniadis '80, Chairman of the College Board of Trustees, for a constructive dialogue on the pedagogical challenges and future directions of the School.

This experience not only enhanced the teachers' professional development but also reinforced the College's connection to the global educational community.
