Participation of Athens College Grade 2 students in the "European Week of Waste Reduction"

Nov 16, 2023

Students of Athens College Grade 2 participate in the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) organized by EOAN (Hellenic Organization for Recycling), during the week of November 18-26 2023.

The volume of waste produced every day, with a large percentage of it coming from the packaged food we consume, led us to the decision to take action. Each one of us will make our own effort and will attempt to reduce the packaging from the food we consume and the products we use both at school and at home.

At School, we decided to set aside the classroom trash cans for a while and collect all the trash that would result from the food we consumed during the week in a separate box .

A daily record was made of the rubbish collected in the classroom and this gave us the opportunity to observe the increase in volume day by day. We then categorized them and discussed our alternatives.

Among the solutions proposed in order to reduce this garbage we decided that students would:

either bring their food in a Tupperware without unnecessary wrappings e.g. plastic wrap or foil.

or carry a Tupperware or washable canvas bag in their bag every day in which to carry their lunch. They can ask the ladies in the cafeteria to place the food they want in the Tupperware or washable bag instead of in a disposable container.

Your input, is valuable in reducing packaging at home as well.

Our slogan magnet from our action will remind you how:

"Our planet doesn't come in packaging".
