The “fermeli” (φέρμελη) is the elaborately embroidered vest or waistcoat of an Evzone’s – that is, the klepth or Independence fighter’s – uniform.

The red and black colors symbolize the sacrifice, blood and mourning of battles, while white highlights the purity and justice of the struggle for independence. The blue and white colors also make reference to the Greek flag.  The gold embroidery on the fermeli and the color purple are elements that draw upon Byzantine history.

Second grade children painted both views of the fermeli, decorating them with symbols, patterns and motifs inspired by the struggle for liberation and our rich, national tradition.

You can view a sample of their work here.
