Nikolaos Tsavliris graduated from Athens College in 1966 and thereafter obtained a Diploma in Shipping from London Guildhall University, a Post-Graduate Diploma in Shipping Law from University College, London, and Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) from the University of London.  Upon completion of his studies, he joined the family business, Tsavliris Maritime Group. He has served as Principal Member of London’s Baltic Exchange, Underwriting Member of Lloyd’s of London, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

Over the years, he has been actively involved in the shipping community, participating in various capacities on the boards of several organizations.  Among the many, he served as President of the Board of the Hellenic Salvage & Tug Owners Association, President of the Hellenic Branch of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, Member of the Board of the International Salvage Union, and Member of the Board of the European Tug Owners Association.  He is also a Member of the Board – Arbitrator & Assessor of the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and Member of the International Law Association. 

He has represented Greece at numerous international conferences and organizations and has written extensively on maritime accidents, shipwrecks, tugboat towing and salvaging, as well as marine pollution. In 2016, he was the recipient of the Capital Link Greek Shipping Award and in 2005 was honored by the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology for his significant contribution to Greek shipping, as well as by the Piraeus Port Authority for his continuous offering to the port of Piraeus.

At the same time, his engagement in social activities is equally broad.  He has served as President of the International Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Piraeus, Vice-President & Honorary Member of the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association, Treasurer of the Friends of Liberty Association (“HELLAS LIBERTY” Floating Museum), Member of the Steering Committee for the establishment of the Center for Hellenic & Southeastern European Studies (Constantinos G. Karamanlis Chair) at Tufts University (USA), and more.

Central to his social contribution is his long-standing and multifaceted service to the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation, where he fulfilled the roles of Treasurer (2005 - 2013), Vice-Chairman (2014 - 2017) and Chairman of the Board of Directors (2017 - 2021).  He has been a member of the College Team for many years, participating in the Athens Marathon, the Authentic, for which was he was awarded the College’s “Lifetime Sports Prize” in 2016.

He is married to Maira Tsavliris, with whom they have two daughters, graduates of Athens College (Claire Tsavliris -Kanonis '96 and Alexandra Tsavliris - Andreadis '98) and five grandchildren, four of which already attend the College.
