Athens College Junior High School – Meeting with author Angeliki Darlasi
This school year, students approached the supplementary reading book in Junior High School Grade 1 a little differently. On Friday, September 18, all Junior High School Grade 1 classes gathered in the school library to meet author Angeliki Darlasi, who presented her book “When the Statues Left.” The previous day, students discussed the book, which they had read over the summer, with the school librarians.
Using visual materials and an engaging, interactive approach, the author brought the text to life and helped students better understand the book’s themes and historical context. After the presentation, students asked questions they had prepared with the guidance of their Greek teachers. The day concluded with creative writing activities in the classroom inspired by topics explored in the book.
Through their meeting with the author, students learned how real-life events can inspire literary works and gained a deeper appreciation of the power of literature. We hope that this presentation will be the starting point for students to cultivate a love of reading, at a time when culture, creativity, and imagination are needed more than ever.
