Athens College Junior High School – Educational Program in Geneva: Youth Training at the United Nations

Mar 23, 2026

From March 16 to 20, the students of the “Youth Training at the United Nations” Club traveled to Geneva to experience firsthand the daily operations of the international organizations that shape our world. Within just a few days, they sat in UN conference rooms, walked the corridors of the Palais des Nations, and met people who work every day to advance peace, health, labor, and human rights. This experience was their first encounter with a place where global ideas are transformed into action.

Through expert presentations, guided tours of historic institutions, and constructive discussions, the students gained valuable insights into global challenges and international decision-making processes. They were particularly excited with the presentation by Ms. Dorine van der Wal, a representative of the World Health Organization, who spoke about the Organization’s mission and the challenges it faces. Equally impactful was the address by Ms. Aikaterini Vounisiou, a member of Greece’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, on the topic of human rights. Another highlight was the UN simulation session, during which the students assumed the roles of state representatives. They debated, negotiated, submitted proposals, and ultimately collaborated to draft a joint resolution on artificial intelligence. The program concluded with presentations of group projects on the Sustainable Development Goals, followed by visits to major museums in Geneva and Lausanne, further enriching the students’ experience.

This trip brought the students closer not only to the international realities but also to one another, fostering collaboration, dialogue, and a deep awareness that young people can—and must—have a voice in shaping the future.
