European Project "Climate Collaborators: Uniting Schools for Change" - Climate Research in Northern Italy

Apr 24, 2024

Students from the Athens College Junior High School "World Explorers" Club visited Northern Italy from April 7th to April 10th, 2024, as part of the European Project: "Climate Collaborators: Uniting Schools for Change”. The project aims to promote collaboration among European schools and raise awareness among students about the urgent global issue of climate crisis. The project is a collaboration between Athens College Junior High School, the French School "College Jean Vilar," which visited our School recently as part of the Erasmus+ program, and the Italian School "Liceo Scientifico G.B. Grassi."

During the educational excursion of the group to Northern Italy, students had the opportunity to conduct experiments in collaboration with students from "Liceo Scientifico G.B. Grassi" and compare experimental data from each country. Students visited the Science and Technology Museum Leonardo da Vinci in Milan, the Scala of Milan, the Duomo Cathedral, and the "Alessandro Volta Museum" in Como.

Students also hiked to Mount Monte Rossa in the Alagna Valsesia area, reaching an altitude of 1600 m, where they could observe the Alpine glaciers. During their hike, they studied the change in atmospheric temperature with increasing altitude, using thermometers and altimeters to collect temperature and altitude data respectively. They analyzed their data with Professor Maurizio Maugeri at the University of Milan, in the department of Environmental Science and Policy, where they further understood the value of glaciers in the European ecosystem, as well as the causes and effects of glaciers melting. Finally, students conducted field research and studied the water of Lake Como, using water and soil thermometers, as well as pH, nitrate, and sulfate ion measurement test sticks. The "World Explorers" Club continues its journey, staying informed, conducting research, experimenting, and envisioning a more sustainable future!
