Apr 22, 2024

Students of the Athens College Junior High School "World Explorers" Club participated in yet another environmental awareness activity, cleaning a beach in Artemis. This initiative took place in collaboration with the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA). HELMEPA is a pioneering voluntary commitment of Greek seafarers and shipowners to protect the seas from ship pollution.

Students recorded the litter they collected using National Geographic's "Debris Tracker" application, helping to collect data on plastic pollution. The "Debris Tracker" app allows users to record data about litter in marine environments, helping to raise awareness and knowledge about the problem of plastic pollution.

Alongside the beach cleanup, the students conducted field research, collecting seawater samples, taking measurements of water quality, water temperature, sand, and air. During the research, they also discussed the existence of microplastics in the environment and their impact on the food chain.
