Athens College Students and Alumni compete with SAKA's Association Teams

Oct 16, 2023

The cultivation of an athletic spirit has been integral to our School’s educational process. Our students receive first-rate training in physical education and develop skills in a variety of sports, but also acquire competition experience by participating in team sports championships.

The Athens College - Psychico College Alumni Association (SAKA) has as its statutory purpose the observance and promotion of the spirit of Athens College, its principles and values, the ethics and any other support for its educational work as well as the operation of sports departments.

SAKA has been a sports association for many decades, long before the introduction of a sports legislation in our country. From 2022, taking into account the current framework, after amending its Statutes, SAKA is a recognized sports association of dual purpose, fully harmonized with the sports legislation.

Today, there are track and field, volleyball, swimming, football and basketball teams, which give the opportunity to Athens College students to successfully participate in competitions of the sports associations of Attica as well as in national championships, i.e. in competitions outside of school sports, of a much higher level.

SAKA is one of the most historical associations of SEGAS and today has a total of 150 members, with 95% of them being College students and 5% graduates. In recent years, the SAKA Track and Field team has been a protagonist both at home and abroad, recording significant distinctions in national, European, and world championships.

On the occasion of the recent first place of the Track and Field Team in the overall ranking at the Panhellenic K20 Championship (16-17/9), the President of the Board of Directors of SAKA Mr. Aristides Pittas '78 said:

"After last year's double first place in the overall rankings for Men and Women K18 in the respective Panhellenic Championship, this year the Club, for the first time in its history, achieved exactly the same achievement in the K20 category, which fills us with great satisfaction. Our goal is to keep athletics at the top level where it is now and to have similar successes in the other sports that we cultivate."

SAKA's 1st Vice President and Head of Sports Mr. George Sakellariadis '01 stressed that: "About twenty years ago, we did not participate as SAKA or Athens College in an organized way in national track and field championships, but only a few athletes, with personal provision. Today, we are the 2nd club in points in Greece and we conquer one victory after another in all age groups, while we also represent the country internationally. Congratulations to athletes, coaches, families for all the sacrifices!".
