Abstract:
Teaching and Learning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Lessons from the use of Digital Technologies in Education
It is widely acknowledged that generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the fastest-growing technologies of our time, already bringing significant and unpredictable implications for education. Even those who have long focused on the integration of digital technologies in education (researchers, teachers, teacher educators, policymakers) recognize that this technology introduces fundamentally different features, which require in-depth investigation within a continuously evolving and uncertain techno-social environment.
Despite various initiatives by the Greek state over the past 25 years, the integration of digital technologies into the educational process has yet to reach the desired level. In this context, the presentation aims to highlight the major challenges that Artificial Intelligence poses for education in Greece, with the goal of helping the system fulfill its enduring social mission: to prepare students for the world they will encounter in the future. The key questions guiding this educational dialogue include investigating the primary shifts in the educational process brought about by AI, the curricular changes required in response, and the skills teachers must develop to leverage the opportunities that AI offers for learning.
