Jun 30, 2021

Athens College is proud of its former student, Alecos Levidis ΄63, who was elected a regular member of the Academy of Athens in the field of Painting.

Alecos V. Levidis was born in Athens in 1944.  He studied Theater Direction at the Université du Théâtre des Nations in Paris (1963-1964) and Architecture at the École d'Αrchitecture de l' Université  de Genève  (1964-1969). Since 1971, he lives and works as an artist in Athens.

He has had thirty solo exhibitions and has participated in a large number of group shows both in Greece and abroad.  His most recent one-man exhibition, titled “The Myth-historic,” showed at the Hadjikyriakos-Ghika Gallery (Benaki Museum) in 2020. It was accompanied by a publication (book-catalogue), as were most of his earlier exhibitions.

Alongside his activity as a painter, Alecos V. Levidis has worked as a mural artist (private homes in Arta, Syros and Kifissia), as a set designer (for plays, such as Sophocles’ “Antigone” at the New Stage of Athens in 1991 and August Strindberg’s “Dream” at the Experimental Stage of the National Theater in 2005), and as an art editor for books, through his extensive collaboration with various publishing houses (Agra, MIET [the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank], Athens Concert Hall, University Publications of Crete, Estia, Kedros, and more).

He has also engaged in research on issues related to painting and published relevant work (such as his book, “On Ancient Greek Painting,” for which he received the Academy of Athens Prize in 1995, and his editing (1994) of Book 35 of the “Natural History,” by Pliny the Elder, translated by Tasos Roussos).

Athens College warmly congratulates him!
