"I decided to voluntarily contribute by supporting the Scholarship Program following the financial crisis that I myself as a parent of two Athens College students experienced. I realized both the need of many of our students’ families and the sentiment of relief that they feel when they realize the support that our School has to offer in such difficult times. Our School is a family with strong ties, with a tradition of long-term giving that does not let any of its children be deprived of the College education and experience for financial reasons. Each year hundreds of students are supported by the Scholarship Program. Today, 1 in 5 students receives financial aid. This means that, if we have not needed this support ourselves, a friend of ours, a classmate who sat next to us or next to our children has definitely needed it."

"My decision to become actively involved as a Class Agent came organically. I was inspired by my father, Pakis Vafiadakis, who has served—and continues to serve—the Athens College community with dedication and genuine care. From him, I learned that one's relationship with the School does not end at graduation; rather, it evolves and takes on a deeper meaning over time. What interests me most is keeping the connection between alumni and our School vibrant and meaningful. I believe in creating opportunities for communication, engagement, and reconnection within our community. Athens College is not simply the place where we spent our student years; it is a collection of values, experiences, and relationships that continue to shape and accompany us long after graduation. "When I joined Athens College it was my first time far from home. I was a boarder, and the School dominated my daily life. Athens College effectively became my home away from home and the people an extension of my family. And while I complained about the school, about teachers, about anything under the sun as it were, a few years post-graduation I came to realize that Athens College was in fact my single, perennial, point of reference – a constant: people come and go but the College remains there for me. "It all started with a reunion. Three classmates and I took it upon ourselves to organize it, and what we found there — how many people wanted to reconnect, how alive the bond with the school still was — kept us engaged. From that came the Class Agent role, and eventually the AFD Coordination Committee. The Alumni Fund Drive has existed since 1967. Today, over 20% of the student body receives financial aid — and nearly half of those funds come from gifts by members of the alumni community. That's something concrete, and worth someone's time."
