The visionary behind the establishment of World Greek Language Day at the College

Feb 20, 2026

On Thursday, February 19, Junior High School Grade 2 students from Athens College and Psychico College attended a lecture by Mr. Jannis Korinthios, who helped establish World Greek Language Day. The students posed questions to the distinguished guest, sparking an engaging discussion on the Greek language.

Mr. Jannis Korinthios served as a Professor of Modern Greek at both the University of Oriental Studies in Naples and the University of Calabria. He has been a prominent figure within the Greek diaspora, a founding member of the Greek Community of Naples, and a former President of the Federation of Greek Communities and Brotherhoods of Italy.

Following UNESCO's historic decision on November 12, 2025, officially declaring February 9 as World Greek Language Day, our School had the honor of welcoming the professor who first envisioned and advocated for its establishment. This annual global celebration acknowledges the profound contribution of the Greek language to world cultural heritage.

The event concluded with musical performances by the school choir, accompanied by xylophone melodies. The teachers responsible for coordinating the meeting were Ms. P. Kostala and Ms. E. Geronikolou, on behalf of Athens College, and the Deputy Director of Psychico College Junior High School, Ms. D. Georgiou, on behalf of Psychico College.
