Athens College Elementary School – EU Code Week

Feb 3, 2026

EU Code Week is an important initiative that introduces children and adults to the world of programming in a creative and accessible way. Its goal is to develop digital skills and encourage innovation across Europe. Our School implemented a rich program of activities, including both unplugged (offline) activities and digital creative coding, for which we received the corresponding certificates of active participation.

During the week, all sections from Grade 1 through 6 engaged in image-decoding activities, gradually approaching the logic of coding and decoding in age-appropriate ways.

Grade 1 students learned the basic principles of image decoding by following coloring instructions, both in print and digitally, using a painting program. Grade 2 students continued with similar activities, matching numbers and colors to reveal digital images. Grade 3 and 4 students used Word, working with tables to reveal simple and more complex images, recognizing coding patterns, making predictions, and correcting errors.

The older grades, 5 and 6, worked in Excel, managing cells like pixels to decode more demanding images. Grade 6 students even created the College's Coat of Arms in pixel art, producing a detailed and complex image.

All classes participated enthusiastically, developing skills in logic, collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity—skills essential in today's digital world.
