Athens College Elementary School - German Department: Grade 3 celebrates Martinstag!

Nov 24, 2025

In the Grade 3 classes of the German Department, we enjoyed a special experience this year as we learned about "Martinstag" (St. Martin's Day), one of Germany's most beloved traditions for children.

Through the story of St. Martin, the students learned about the Roman soldier who shared his cloak with a homeless man on a freezing night – an act that vividly reflects the values of solidarity and helping others.

The children then enthusiastically completed a worksheet and sang traditional songs connected to the celebration. We concluded the activity with a simulation of Martinsumzug, the cherished lantern parade held every year in Germany. Walking together and singing created a warm, joyful atmosphere, just like the experience of children there.

It was a beautiful celebration that brought our students closer to the culture of the German language and German-speaking countries, reminding us that learning a foreign language becomes even more meaningful when it is enriched with timeless values.
