Centennial Celebration Event in New York

May 23, 2025

On Friday, May 16, 2025, Athens College held a special Centennial Celebration in New York City, marking 100 years since the school's founding and concluding the quiet phase of its Endowment Campaign. The event was hosted by the Board of Trustees of Athens College in Greece (the Board of Athens College in New York), and brought together approximately 75 alumni, friends, and supporters. Among the guests was Greek Prime Minister and College alumnus Kyriakos Mitsotakis '86.

The event featured a conversation between Mr. Mitsotakis and Dean of Columbia Business School, Mr. Costis Maglaras '87, also an alumnus. The discussion focused on the future of education in Greece, the College, and the role of AI in the educational process.

Mr. George Antoniadis '80, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, opened the event, followed by Mr. Alexis Phylactopoulos '65, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation. Mr. Phylactopoulos reflected on the College's history, its enduring values, and the strong collaboration between the Boards in Greece and the United States. Professor Spiros N. Pollalis, Director/President of Athens College, spoke next, highlighting the College's mission and strategic priorities.

Mr. Antoniadis then outlined the goals of the Endowment Campaign, stressing the importance of raising funds to continuously improve the high quality of education provided by the College and to support the Scholarship Program. He explained that an Endowment is a permanent asset for a school, as it is invested, providing predictable income, while preserving and growing its value over time. In just nine months, the Board of Trustees has raised $20 million, more than doubling the College's existing Endowment, which was originally established in New York City in 1928. Mr. Antoniadis noted that the new funds will allow Athens College to invest in STEM lab equipment and technology, teacher training programs in innovative methodologies, and financial aid scholarships. One donation will also offer support to Athens College graduates who wish to pursue studies in the United States.

The event concluded with recognition of the donors who have supported this coordinated and collaborative effort to support the School's Endowment. Mr. Antoniadis announced that the public phase of the campaign begins immediately, with the goal of raising an additional $20 million.
