Athens College High School distinctions in the Panhellenic Competition EOES 2024

Feb 8, 2024

During school year 2023-2024, Athens College High School participated in the Panhellenic Competition for the formation of the national team for the European Science Olympiad 2024 in Luxembourg.  The competition is addressed to teams from the countries of the European Union consisting of students up to 17 years old, aiming at the acquisition of skills in science and the cultivation of scientific thinking. The School's team, which was formed through a series of internal competitive procedures, consisted of three core members of Grade 11, Efstratios Rallis, Nikolaos-Emmanouel Skevis and Angelos Talpas, while Aikaterini Kouloumpi and Vyron Trikkalidis were the two alternate members. The training of the team was undertaken by teachers Mr. X. Rafios, Mr. L. Rounis and Mr. E. Charatsis, with the significant help of the heads of the laboratories of our School, Mr. N. Kogias and Mr. I. Kolympiris.

Through a series of laboratory exercises that took place both during this and last school year, students came into contact with different topics in the subjects of Biology, Physics, and Chemistry, gaining important practical skills and broadening their knowledge in Science. At the same time, they learned to work effectively as a team, to manage unexpected situations, to find solutions and, above all, to appreciate the beauty of science. They learned to understand that science is not just solving theoretical exercises on paper, but an active process of observation, reasoning, and drawing conclusions.

The team participated in the Local Competition organized by the E.K.F.E of Halandri, where they won 2nd place and qualified for the National Competition. On January 27, 2024, the team participated in the Panhellenic Competition, at the E.K.F.E Agion Anargyroi, where it won the 3rd place among the teams of Southern Greece and the 4th place at the Panhellenic level. In any case, it was a unique experience for the students, rich in knowledge and lessons and will certainly remain indelibly imprinted in their memory.

Congratulations to our students on their important distinctions!
