Athens College Elementary AC PRODUCERS team wins “Model Special Award” at the W.R.O. Hellas Robotics Competition

Jun 1, 2022

The Athens College Elementary School’s Robotics Team AC PRODUCERS won the “Model Special Award” in the Open Elementary School Grade 3-6 category in the Final of the W.R.O. Hellas Robotics Competition 2022.

The members of the team are:

Ionas Anagnostakis

Giorgos Glynos

Ilianna Diakaki

Angeliki Kelaidi

Andreas Bardis

Maximus Wilkinson

Ms Vivi Leli, Computer Science teacher, prepared the team throughout the year in the Athens College Elementary’s Robotics classes. Mr. Nikolas Makris, Computer Science teacher in the Elementary School, and Mr. Vasilis Tsalikis, Computer Science teacher in the Junior High School, supported the team throughout. The Robotics department of the School wishes to thank the Arts teachers Mr. Omiros Kosmidis and Mr. Augoustos Veinoglou, for their support.

The Elementary School’s Robotics program aims to develop the students’ ability to participate actively in team projects, to familiarize themselves with problem-solving processes and to explore in an applied way the mechanics and algorithmic thinking that go into robotics programming. The theme of this year’s Competition was Agricultural Production and the opportunities that technology creates, how they integrate in existing agricultural practices, how they can address shortages in resources, quality reductions and increases in production costs. Our School’s Robotics Team studied how an automated network of machines could be incorporated in the production of organic olive oil. They then constructed a fully automated organic olive mill using LEGO WeDO blocks, and ran two remote programs of remote observation, data collection, and notification, which intervene where and when needed.

The Attica Regional Round took place at the OTE Academy building in Marousi, on Sunday, May 22, 2022. Our students successfully qualified through all the phases of the Competition, and qualified to the Greek National Finals. The national finals took place in the Sports Complex of the Olympic Village in Thrakomakedones, on Sunday, May 29, 2022. Our team succeeded in two phases of the Competition and received an award for their model.

Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis, former Minister of Health and Social Security and Mayor of Athens, and Dr. Stamatis Krimizis, academic and space scientist with extensive experience in major USA space projects and NASA, attended the event. Our students received praise from Mr. Ioannis Somalakidis and Mr. Anastasios Ladias, the President and the Science Advisor of W.R.O. Hellas respectively.

The Competition is organized annually by W.R.O Hellas, in a strategic partnership with COSMOTE, and under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.
