Psychico College Elementary School - World Greek Language Day

Mar 17, 2026

Psychico College Elementary School dedicated two weeks to celebrating World Greek Language Day. With the significant support of the Library, lectures were given by Ms. Georgantzi, president of the Greek Language Institute; translator Maria Angelidou; and authors Melina Iliopoulou, Evgenia Manolidou, and Vasiliki Zogopoulou, an author and teacher at our School.

All classes participated in activities dedicated to the Greek language, books, and the power of words, through creative projects.

Grade 1 students analyzed and illustrated Odysseas Elytis’s poem “The Sovereign Sun,” formed letters with their bodies, and played games with poems and rhymes with their peers from Athens College Elementary School.

Grade 2 students discovered words that have remained unchanged from antiquity to the present day, explored their etymology, and depicted them visually.

Grade 3 students wrote haiku and studied literal and figurative language, while Grade 4 students analyzed the poem “Just a Little More” by Giorgos Seferis.

In Grade 5, students worked on “The History of a Word,” based on the book by Nikos Vardiampasis; while Grade 6 created a “dictionary of their generation,” with lists of synonyms, and searched for words of Greek origin across various subject areas.

Additionally, in Music class, the students sang famous Greek poems set to music; in the Creative Activities class, they created works inspired by Paul Klee and the poetry of Elytis; and in the Podcast Club, they discussed the significance and power of the Greek language.
