Athens College Junior High School Grade 3 - Educational field trip to Nafplio and Epidaurus
From March 11 to 12, 2026, the nine (9) classes of Junior High School Grade 3 participated in an educational field trip to Nafplio and Epidaurus.
On the first day, the students took part in a guided tour organized by the Basil Papantoniou Foundation (formerly the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation), centered on the theme “Nafplio in the 19th Century.” This educational program is linked to the History curriculum, focusing on the early years of the modern Greek state under the governance of Ioannis Kapodistrias and King Otto (the Regency period).
On the second day, students visited the archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Asclepius in Epidaurus. The visit is connected to the MYP Service as Action project for the second semester, emphasizing active citizenship and support for the work of the Diazoma Association in the preservation and promotion of ancient theaters, as well as the development of the new Epidaurus Archaeological and Environmental Park. In preparation for this visit, and during Flexible Learning Zone hours, students studied materials relating to the archaeological site and the worship of the healing god Asclepius. During the on-site experience, student volunteers served as peer tour guides, guiding their classmates and teachers through key monuments of the Sanctuary. The group also visited the Epidaurus Museum, where experts introduced them to historical methods and concepts related to the evolution of medicine.
The visit concluded at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, where students I. Chaskou, R. Depola, T. Mayrogiannis, P. Stefanidis, and A. Zepou presented a short performance and recited poems inspired by Euripides’ tragedy “Helen”.
