Athens College Elementary School - Educational initiative on reducing food waste and composting

Mar 16, 2026

On Monday, February 16, the second phase of an important educational initiative took place at our School as part of the European project Stop Waste Heroes, which aims to raise students' awareness of reducing and sustainably managing food waste.

At the beginning of the activity, the results of food-waste weigh-ins conducted at the homes of students participating in the project were presented. These findings provided an opportunity to discuss food waste and highlight practical ways to reduce it. At the same time, an educational session was held in classes 5a, 5d, and 5f, during which students learned about the importance of responsible food consumption and their role in reducing waste. They were also informed about the electric composter donated to our School, how it works, and the environmental benefits of composting.

The initiative continued on Wednesday, March 11, when the students of the Environmental and Gardening Club used the compost produced by the composter for the first time. With great enthusiasm—and with the support of our School’s agronomist and the Club’s teachers—the students collected the compost and used it in the School’s outdoor area to plant spring flowers, putting into practice what they had learned about the circular management of organic waste.

Through activities such as these, our students develop environmental awareness, understand the importance of waste reduction, and actively participate in caring for their School and the natural environment.
