The 5th World Artificial Intelligence Competition for Youth (WAICY 2022) took place online on Saturday, December 3 and Sunday, December 4, 2022. Teams from over 100 countries presented 750 Artificial Intelligence projects. Our School participated with three (3) group projects in the High School category.

The following two teams received awards in the competition:

Athens College High School 1 students Stylianos Antoniadis, Georgios Chainis, and Nikolaos Chalazonitis received the “AI Excellence” Award for their project “Deus Ex Machina”. The project relates to the safe transport of assistance in cases of war or natural disasters. Drones, with the support of a Computational Vision model, do terrain recognition to identify the optimal route. They utilize the A* algorithm and guide a robot from the launch pad to the destination.  

Athens College High School 1 students Efstratios Rallis and Vyronas Trikkalidis won the “Impact Excellence” award with their “Jam Clogger” project. This project aims to optimize the traffic light settings using Reinforcement Learning. Students used the Q-learning algorithm, using a reward-punishment model to train a Machine Learning model to make the optimal decisions aiming to maximize the flow of traffic and minimize the waiting time at the traffic lights.

Mr. Andreas Karampelas, coach of the teams and Computer Science teacher of Athens College, received the Outstanding Coach Award.

Mrs. Heather Quirk, English Teacher at the Athens College High School, supported the teams in their preparation for the presentations.

Finally, the students who won the Gold Award in 2021, were invited by the organizers to participate as judges in the Elementary School category. Chrysoula Vamvaka, Athens College High School 3 student, received the Outstanding Volunteer Award and Amalia Toutziaridi, Psychico College IB2 student, received the Outstanding Judge Award, for their contributions to this year’s competition.
