Final Round of Howland Oratory Competition at Athens College

The final round of Athens College’s Howland Oratory Competition, open to high school seniors, was held on Friday, May 21, 2021 in Choremi Auditorium.

Winner of the HOWLAND Prize for academic year 2020-2021 is Aikaterini-Eleni Karaindrou.

The contestants’ speeches were on the following theme:
Each time we celebrate the anniversary of 1821 and gather to honor the memory of the great builders of Greece’s Freedom, we have a duty to delve into its meaning. (…) This is more necessary now than ever before because it is crucial that we preserve the great good of our freedom in current times. (…) For this, we need Education and Science. Without a solid education we will not be able to maintain our freedom for long.

200 years since the Revolution of 1821 the demand for education that cultivates free will and genuine patriotism remains relevant and is the cornerstone of the College’s mission.

The panel of judges was comprised of:  Mr. Constantinos Delicostopoulos ΄90, Attorney at Law before the Supreme Court, associate of the Scientific Council of the Hellenic Parliament, and member of the Athens College Board of Directors | Mr. Haris Konidaris ΄90, Director of the Presss, Information and Communication Office of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens, and  | Mr. Alexander Charonis, MD, Ophthalmologist, Director of the Retina and Uveitis Service at Athens Vision Eye Institute.

Students who qualified for the final round of the competition were:

5. Stratigopoulos, Andreas  

In addition to the above, the following students qualified for the  semi-finals:
1. Dimitrijevic, Eirini

3. Mpakola, Vasiliki

4. Rousta, Georgia

5. Zaimis, Konstantinos
